Toothpaste Phobia, It’s a Real Thing!
Your Community Dental has heard many stories of people who
struggle to brush their teeth because of a strange but very real phobia. The
phobia of toothpaste is actually a very common fear, especially amongst young
children. Our dental office can help you better understand this fear and give
you some tips for coping with the disorder.
For young children, the phobia often simply revolves around a
lack of interest in brushing their teeth. They believe it is just simply not
fun and they would rather be playing. To encourage children to become interested
in brushing their teeth, try using an electric toothbrush. There are many
unique toothbrushes available that can help a child actually enjoy the act of
brushing their teeth. If this doesn’t work, get creative. Brush the child’s
teeth while their minds are occupied. Maybe while they are watching TV,
reading, or even bathing.
Toothpaste is a biggie! A lot of children, and adults as
well, are sensitive to toothpaste. Many people don’t enjoy the taste of
toothpaste or dislike the mint flavor. Young children can be very sensitive to
minty flavors and will often complaint that “it is too hot.” The fact is, you
don’t even need toothpaste. The main
purpose of toothpaste is freshen your breath, not to clean your teeth. Try
using a very plain or fruit-flavored toothpaste, but if that isn’t to your
liking you can just use water. The act of brushing is what is truly important
when it comes to keeping plaque off your teeth.
Another roadblock that can keep people from brushing is,
gagging. A sensitive gage reflex can make brushing a challenge and make it a
task that is scary. To help with this we recommend using a smaller toothbrush
head and breathing through your nose.
